creative cultures 2

I first met our next creative when we were in just 8th grade. We played club volleyball together in south Florida. She was really good at volleyball & I was intimidated by her! We became closer through the season and were always goofing around at practice. We remained aquaintances through high school, seeing each other at volleyball events & around town. Katie came back into my life the summer before we began college, when she started dating a boy I had known since I was 3 years old (who later became her husband!). I was so excited to learn that she would be living in my dorm (good ol' Southgate)! We bonded over the salad bar (& the dessert bar), doing things only freshman do & riding around in her black explorer. Katie and I played Club Volleyball at FSU together, went through sorority recruitment together and shared many great memories in college. I was honored to stand by Katie on her wedding day to Bobby, as one of her bridesmaids. Her adorable son, Colton Robert, was born on my 24th birthday. We love shopping together, sharing deals and drinking diet cokes!

Without further ado, meet Katie:
the day she became a Mrs!

Colton Robert & I just after he was born!

1. A/S/L with a twist:
A. Stage of life, year in school, major
S. Details about you

L. Where you are based, where you are going, where you want your work to go
My current stage of life at the young age of 24 is being a stay at home mommy to my precious son Colton! (Who by the way shares the same birthday as Adrienne) and will be 1 year old so soon. I have been married for 2 and half years to my high school sweetheart Bobby! I am one blessed girl! I attended the one and only Florida Sate University and there my emphasis was in Special Event Planning. I thought I wanted to pursue a career in events, but should of stuck with my first love of Fashion. However I do love to entertain so the events background has had some perks! I am currently doing my number one dream job of being able to stay at home with my son. About six months ago I started another part time job from home as a stylist for a boutique jewelry company for a celebrity coveted and editor adored line, Stella & Dot. I do in home trunk shows, and style women while they shop and drink wine with their girlfriends, and get to work my own hours and be my own boss! It is ideal, and the jewelry is amazing and very fashion forward. My real passion is to do wardrobe styling work, and have helped some people for fun with their personal image and styles but would love to combine my job with Stella & Dot with my own freelance wardrobe styling and consulting. I have worked with some family and friends and created inspiration boards based on their personal fashion sense and lifestyle, as well as consulting on shopping trips for them. My goal is to be be able to offer different services such as styling, consulting, closet evaluations and clean outs, packing for trips, helping women dress for their age and body type, trend forecasting, shopping trips, consign clothing for women, and mostly helping women on a tight budget find amazing deals, and dress like a millionaire!

2. Favorite meal:
Thanks to my Italian roots, and great cooks in my family I love anything Italian, but also I quite frequently crave Sushi! My favorite is salad with ginger dressing and a JB roll tempura style!

3. Favorite beverage:
I am little too obsessed with fountain Diet Coke I need to cut back! And I also love a great Margarita, with the salt!

At one of her Stella & Dot parties
4. What is your first memory of being creative?
Since Middle School, I can remember my friends asking for Fashion advice, and even more into High school and College, and I loved giving my opinions and suggesting things for them to wear! Now I live with my husband obviously and when we are getting ready to go out somewhere I always ask him which outfit to wear and whatever one he picks I usually choose the opposite one because I know it is probably more fashionable haha! I miss getting ready with girlfriends sometimes!

5. What or who inspires you?
My mom is definitely my biggest inspiration as an all around women and mom. On the Fashion side I have a new appreciation for when I see moms walking around with like 5 kids and look totally put together and stylish, because I am like how is that even possible that she made it out of the house with no spit up on her shirt and her hair so perfect and she is looking so chic, all while getting all those kids dressed and out the door as well?! Now that is talent!

6. Favorite quote that inspires your artwork:
"Strength and Dignity are her clothing" Proverbs 31:25
" Life is a Fashion show and the world is your runway"

Styling a shopper
7. Favorite thing about your artwork:
I love to research trends for each season and share my favorites. I also love to help a women feel more confident by expressing herself through her style and helping her dress for her age, body type, and Lifestyle! Through Stella & Dot I love meeting new women all the time and helping them accessorize, and change up their every day wardrobe with statement outfit maker jewelry!

8. Challenges about your artwork:
The challenges with these goals I have for myself is that this is field is such a large spectrum and there is so much I can do with it that I need to start small and accomplish those goals and grow the services as I master different skills when dealing with styling!

9. Your dream piece of art to create:
I would love to go dress shopping with brides and mother of the brides to help them with the perfect dress for the big day. My ideal dream would be to style a bride!

Stella & Dot jewelry
10. Favorite article of clothing/accessory/shoes
My all time favorite article of clothing is a vintage Gucci dress my mom surprised me with for my rehearsal dinner. It is a one of a kind piece, not many were made, it is very timeless and chic! I also love my vintage bargain finds from when Adrienne and I would go looking for treasures! My favorite belt is one we found at a vintage consignment shop and it was a dollar!

11. Where can we see more of you?
I just started a blog that encompasses my 3 passion in life! My faith, my family, and Fashion! Follow me at
http://faithfamilyfashion.blogspot.com/

12. Can we buy you?
You can purchase Stella & Dot jewelry through me at my website www.stelladot.com/katiemoses
Stella & Dot has been featured in many issues of Lucky, Instyle, People,Redbook etc. Half the line is under $50
You can book a trunk show with me, and get on average $250 in free jewelry just by having your girlfriends over for a shopping night!
You can also contact me for any of your fashion, and style needs!

Stella & Dot trunk show
13. What are your hopes & dreams for your work?
My hopes are to start to get more practice with wardrobe styling and building my portfolio with more work I have done, so I can build my reputation and market myself!

14. Anything else we should know?
I think it is so important for us women to always keep an outlet for creativity! Especially when you are a mom and wife, you need that time to yourself to be creative and remember the things you love to do and who you are.

friday things

things that are making me happy today:
1. I am going to vegas on sunday (for the first time ever!) for work. followed by nyc on thursday, also for work!
2. J is taking the bar in 12 days, he is studying like a champ. I will be so glad when it is over & more importantly, passed!
3. dad is feeling great.

Avalon Hotel, by night
4. I got to see the lovely, beautiful, creative genius & funny, "Pretty Ashley" two times this week. She was in town for a Florida State Film School fundraising trip, she gets to work for the garnet & gold. We watched 9 short films and kept being so impressed & thinking it was so cool that these students have studied, are now doing and will continue to do exactly what they started their freshman year doing. I am on career 5 & Ashley is debating what her next steps will be.. We think film students are cool.
We also got to go to the newly renovated Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills for dinner at, Oliverio. The hotel was a favorite of Marilyn Monroe, she lived here for 3 years... a little history blurb from I Am Not A Stalker..

"the historic Avalon Hotel, where my girl Marilyn Monroe once lived for a period of about three years back in the 1950’s. During that time, the property was a residential motel known as the Beverly Carlton that was first opened in 1948 and was designed by legendary graphic designer Alvin Lustig. And while the hotel was actually considered to be a moderately priced accommodation for its time, besides Marilyn, such stars as Mae West, Lucille Ball, and Desi Arnaz often stayed there. In the 70s and 80s the hotel became rundown, underwent several remodels, and was transformed into both a retirement home and an apartment complex. In 1998, property developer Brad Korzen purchased it and enlisted his now-wife, Kelly Wearstler of KWID Designs, to give the place an extensive reboot. In doing so, Wearstler and her team researched the original design elements of the hotel, which they obtained from photographs taken by famed photographer Julius Shulman for a 1948 Forum Magazine article, and it was those original designs that ended up serving as the inspiration for the entire remodel."

Poolside bungalows. I can just see Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz hanging here!
It was great seeing Ashley, it is always fun when people are here visiting because it makes me make the effort to hang out with friends that I love, but might not have had the opportunity to hang out with one on one, if I was back in my comfort home (state).

5. The text I just got from my sister:

Refering to when our mom would drive us around in the backseat of her big, white, 2 door, Cadillac. We'd fill the back seat with Cabbage Patch dolls and us, decked out in neon windbreaker shorts, no doubt, jamming out to Madonna, the Immaculate Collection
while listening to our cassette of..

there may never be a collection of songs that can top this
6. Getting to see NYC friends!

7. The wonderful responses I have gotten from Creative Cultures

things that are not making me happy today:
1. Ambiguity about the shows I will be working at, (not making me unhappy, more anxious!)
2. Do not know what to pack!
3. The NYC weather I will be in. Frio = No Bueno.

stuck in italics and I do not know why.

creative cultures 1

In an attempt to spread the blog love, I have decided to create a new weekly addition to thick hair: creative cultures. each week I will select someone from the creatives who has work to share. creatives can include: art, cooking, graphic design, fashion, writing, etc. anything that inspires others and can be original.

my first creative culture feature is: Cara Murphy, of Ponte Vedra, Florida, currently living in Tallahassee, Florida.

I first met Cara on bid day 2006, she is my pledge sister. I instantly knew I liked Cara when she said, "I love Jesus & I love margaritas". Cara could often be found barefoot, with a skateboard, wandering the ADPi house making sisters laugh, driving sisters to class, balling on the IM field, & making sister's smile, just by being herself. she loves tye-dye, the beach and being a hippie. We also both drove old school 4Runners.

so without further ado, meet her:
self portait
more of her work:

1. A/S/L with a twist:
I'm 23 years old, and at the stage in my life I like to refer to as "limbo". I just graduated from FSU and am in the hopefully soon to be non-perpetual search of a job in which I am forced to be creative. I majored in Studio Art and Art History so I am anxiously wanting to just relocate and surround myself with people who share the same passions and ambition as I do. I'm an avid writer and Palahniuk reader as well as a lover of all things involving the ocean. I love music as much as I love art and am undoubtedly obsessed with Florida State Football. As for where I want my work to go, like most artists, I just want to become an expert at what I do. I work with any medium I can get my hands on and would love to continue to dabble in other areas as well as perfecting my work in the areas in which I'm most successful; painting and photography.

2. Favorite Meal:
My favorite meal has to be a tie between a fully loaded Peruvian from Angie's Subs in Jax Beach, complete with Fritos on it...and First Street Grille's (also in Jax Beach, which is now closed...pause for moment of silence....) french onion soup. Ugh...it's making me homesick just thinking about it!

3. Favorite Drink:
My favorite non-alcoholic beverage is most definitely Cheerwine. It's not sold in Florida apparently, so my friend Jordan brings it when he comes to visit from GA.
My favorite alcoholic beverage would have to be Bluepoint Toasted Lager. It's such a good beer and I didn't discover it until last week! I'm Irish, what can I say.

4. What is your first memory of being creative?
My first memory of being creative was in Kindergarden. My mom used to be the "art lady" and would bring in pieces of art for the class to discuss. I remember always having, what my kindergarden mind thought to be really awesome insight. I would think about the art all week until she brought the next one in. I thought it was the raddest thing ever.

5. What or who inspires you?
My mom has really been the one to influence and inspire me the most as an artist. She has been painting my whole life and watching how talented she is has always made me want to push myself. Even when I wanted to make art my major, which is definitely a leap of faith, she always stood by me and encouraged me to expand my creativity. I'm also really inspired by music. If I'm listening to say, Tom Waits, my art is going to reflect a more bluesy feel, whereas if I'm listening to the Ting Tings, it may be a little more bouncy and bright...you get the idea.

6. Favorite quote that inspires your artwork:
"I do my thing, and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful."

-Frederick E. Perl

This quote reminds me to stay true to myself at all times. This is a really important reminder in the art world because people can be so pretentious and want you to change the way you do things. It's one thing to alter a commissioned piece of work for someone, and quite another to be asked to change your style or inspiration as a whole. I've learned this the hard way in every aspect of life. If someone wants to buy a particular piece of artwork, that piece was meant for them; they've established a connection with it. It's the same with who you are as a person. No one should ever want to change who you are to meet their credentials. They should love and accept you as a person just the way you are....(cue Bruno Mars music....)

7. Favorite thing about your artwork:
My favorite thing about my artwork is that it's diverse. I get just as much joy out of welding some metal together as I do from painting say, a still life. I just love art. All of it.

8. Challenging think about your artwork:
A challenge about my artwork is that it's diverse! HA. I know it's the same answer, but sometimes artists are expected to focus on one medium or have one particular style. It's something that I'm always struggling with because I can never decide which medium/style I love the most. Also, I suck at painting people.

9. Your dream piece of art:
Hmmm...iif Dali and Enzo Cucchi had a baby (I know they're both dudes, but just work with me) and he or she did a giant oil painting while listening to some Strung Out mixed with Cake...the band, not the food, and some Bassnectar. HA! I just thought of that right now. THAT would be so badass.

10. Favorite article of clothing/accessory/shoes:
My favorite thing ever (besides the things mentioned above) is a good pair of heels. I LOVE shoes. I have this pair of black sequin stilettos with pink skulls on them. They're my absolute favorite thing I own.

"In the Colors"

Meet: Ellie
Long Beach, California
Angels Heart Dog Rescue

Ellie, female
"She was rescued from the Devore Shelter. She is a two-year-old female Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix. Ellie lives in a pack of socialized dogs at the rescue. She is sweet, affectionate, and very people friendly, but needs a minute to warm up to a man as we suspect a man was mean to her. On first meet, if you are a man, if you allow HER to approach YOU she is fine. Ellie is very potty-trained and also crate-trained. She is a beautiful dog who needs a loving home. She is learning to walk on the leash. Ellie is an intelligent dog who quickly learned her name and began to respond to it almost immediately. She also learns instructions quickly. She is a nice medium-size dog, about 40 or so lbs."

If you are interested in Ellie, please contact Janet Cook of Angel's Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com or 626-340-9316. You can also view our public website at: http://www.angelsheartdogrescue.com/"

tips & jazz

one of my favorite blogs to read: Boobs & Loubs (take everything with a grain of salt, dearies) often blogs about her 'tips & shit'. I, by no means, think of myself as a beauty/hair/skin product connoisseuer (I had to google the spelling on that!); except for the one time during ADPi Rush that the rush chair said my teeth whitener was the best she had ever used, thanks for the shout out!.

but it is always fun to share product ideas.

teeth:
I love this stuff. I use it morning & night, in the AM use it while you: pick what you want to wear for the day, put on your jewelry, let the dog out (just make sure the dog does not run away and you have to spit it in the bushes and yell for him to come back, never happened to me, I am just saying.) It does not work over night but makes teeth less sensitive than evil strips.

hair:

I decided when I moved to California, that I was going to stop highlighting my hair. Turns out I am more of a natural strawberry blonde than I thought! But my hair does have a very strong red tint in the under layers, so I use this to keep my blondie. The best part about using it is that it is bright, pearl-icious, PURPLE when it comes out of the bottle, a beautiful color. The worst part is that it stains the shower walls. Oops.
face:

starting to see a trend? I have always walked straight past Lush when I saw it in the mall, thought it was a waste of money for bath soaps. Only after being stuck in the Orlando airport did I wander in and sample a few things & get their handy dandy "Lush Times" catalog.
I love this cleansing lotion because it is just that, a cleansing lotion, aka it eliminates one of the steps! Granted, it is not to be used alone when you are dealing with a full face of makeup or a serious skin blemish, but I use it morning & night.

eye makeup remover:
Yep. Your eyes are not fooling you. My eyes freak out whenever I use true "eye makeup remover", even the Neutrogena kind. This has been my go to for, forever. My tub is probably 5 years old.. (sanitary?). I dap it on, do something else for a few minutes and then wipe clean with a cotton ball. Great to put on chapped lips at night too.

self tanner:

I was introduced to his by Beth in college. We all began using it religiously during those cold Tallahassee winter months. It is a gradual tan, smells good and is a true moisturizer & not just tanning! Best part? Buy it at WalMart!
under eyes/problem areas:
We all need this. Dark bags: check. Red Nose from being sick: check. Blemish: check. Windburn: check. Just get it, trust me.

scent:
In high school, I used to wear a different scent e.v.e.r.y day. I was super cool. Here are a few of many favorites:
Aquolina, Pink Sugar
Jordan used this all the time in college, therefore I used to use Jordan's all the time in college. Haha. I finally bought my own after graduation. Smells like cotton candy sugary goodness.

Chanel, Chance
This really needs no explanation, if you have smelt it, you know., and if you have not, do you live under a rock? Run to your nearest Sephora and spray up.

Cacharel, Amor Amor
I first bought this at SteinMart, I had smelt it in Seventeen Magazine when I was 16 & loved it. I re-bought it last year after finding it at Marshall's. It is girly, a little bolder than your typical perfume. I still love it. Best part is it is often found at off-price retailers!

Victoria's Secret, Succulent
Sadly, Victoria Secret no longer makes their Mood line of perfume. Yearn, Sweet Craving & Succulent were the scents in this collection. Succulent was my favorite. I now use it sparingly so I do not run out. I found it was 75% off in one of their massive sales. The scent is ambery vanilla with a touch of warm sugar (can you smell it yet?).

I have found a bit of a replacement in:

Britney Spears, Fantasy

pinterest

I just joined Pinterest, (where you can get lots of great pictures to blog about!!)

a few favorites.. from the first page! (I am in troubleee!)

weekender

I love visitors. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Come be one. With J studying for the bar exam, visitors are a great chance for me to get out of his studying ways & explore all the girly parts of my town. (ie: cafes, bakeries, vintage shopping, tourist spots)

My sorority sister who lives in San Diego ventured up to El Lay to meet up with another FSU alum, who shares my last name! (We are both going to ask our parents about their heritage - we both know Wales, but would like to know further, she might be a long lost cousin)

Saturday morning I ventured back to El Lay, once getting on the highway I felt like I was back in south Florida, thanks to this:

First stop, Toast. Taken from their own website, self-proclaiming, "Toast is a place everyone can enjoy, and you and your friends will feel that much cooler when you leave." We probably would have diverted our plans if we had seen that earlier, but nonetheless, it was yum.

Next stop, Hollywood sign! My friend gave me a great little shortcut to get to the best view of the grand sign. We only made it 2/3 the way there, oops.

Glamourous self-portrait
Followed by, my new favorite beer!

The waiter laughed when we did not use our glasses, we are from Florida (State), bottle is perfect.
Meet, Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager:
Sidenote, J & I stopped in NOLA on our long drive to the West Coast where we both tried Abita Ale, and I may or may not have stolen my glass pint with Abita logo on it. Strawberry & I were destined to be friends. Now where can I buy in Los Angeles...

I was constantly agonized by the adorable pictures my family kept sending me of the puppy visitors we had at our house:

Star Daniels, Gracie Daniels, Spencer Holt, Scout Whiddon & Molly Whiddon. BFFs
And then, just when I did not think my weekend could not get more wonderful, she arrived:
Free People dust bag, perfectly wrapped..
MY vintage, Gucci, crossbody bag
Beautifully wrapped, sealed, packed & sent from the i-ella.com seller I bought it from. I am so excited to use her! She is bigger than I thought, but I love that. & She it totally use-able without the strap. Gucci clutch? Yes please. Now, if I could think of an adequate name for her... Her new roommates are: Miss America (LV Speedy), Miss Saigon (quilted Chanel) & Jennifer Lopez (python Prada). What, you don't name your prized pieces? Weird.
